Who is Kyle? What is a Quillow?
Kyle and Andrew
2011 - 2 Weeks before Diagnosis
"I am 15 yrs old. I was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia, a bone marrow failure disease, in September of 2011 and needed a bone marrow transplant. My twin brother, Andrew, was my donor. I spent a month in the hospital. I was lucky. Many of the other children at CHOP and other hospitals are there for much longer. While in the hospital, my grandmother and her friend made me Quillows.
A Quillow is a cross between a quilt and a pillow. I always had two on my bed. I used one for a pillow and one for a blanket. They were so soft and warm! They made me comfortable and I felt a little better. I want to help share that feeling with other sick kids. My brother and I learned how to sew and make Quillows. We delivered our first quillows to CHOP in January 2012.
We sew strength, hope and kourage into every stitch.
We need your help! Please donate so that we can make Quillows to deliver to CHOP and together we can bring a little komfort to those who need it most! From one survivor to another.
Special requests are also taken for those fighting life threatening diseases. Quillows have been shipped around the world! So far children have received Quillows all across the US, Canada, England, Switzerland, Northern Ireland, New Zealand, Croatia, India, Indonesia, South Africa and Australia! Many of these children are battling Aplastic Anemia and other life threatening diseases.
Our goal is to be able to give each child on the BMT (Bone Marrow Transplant) floor a Quillow and then hopefully spread from there!" Currently Quillows are delivered to CHOP's BMT, Oncology, Hematology, and Stroke and Seizure Units.

Kyle's Quillows: Komforting Kids since 2011
Kyle could tolerate the hospital. He could tolerate the needles. The IV trees. The limited menu. What he couldn't tolerate was hearing the little girl next to him get sicker. Kyle was 11 - she was only 3. It didn't seem fair. He couldn't see her, but he grew closer to her each day. After a particularly bad night, he called the one person he thought could make the little girl feel better: Mom-mom. He placed an order for a home-sewn Quillow made by his grandmother. Mom-mom ran to her sewing machine and crafted a perfectly pink blanket. The next day, Kyle sent the blanket via nurse courier. The nurse returned hours later to say that the little girl hadn't let go of the blanket since receiving it. Success.
An idea was born.
Kyle spent a month as a full time resident of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and received a bone marrow transplant performed by CHOP. Kyle is doing really well now. He runs cross country and track, plays in the marching band and jazz band, and attends school full time. Many kids are not as lucky - a fact that refreshes in Kyle's mind during each check up.
Kyle, Andrew and their family want to do more. They spends their time now sewing so that they can bring quillows - a quilted fleece blanket that easily folds into a pillow - to the kids at CHOP. The quillows are small enough to pack in a bag, easy to wash every day, and super soft for sensitve skin. They work well for long hospital stays, traveling for check ups, and resting pretty much anywhere while receiving treatments.
Through the help of volunteer seamstresses and seamsters (ranging from lifers to a troop of new beginners), you can now donate to our cause and komfort a kid at CHOP. Make a donation through this site, send fabric(Fleece 2 yds= 1 Quillow, and/or find out how to make a quillow - and start the cycle of sharing positive energy to those who need it most.
